I can not get the villagers to put different herbs in the stew. They all just want to study the plant. It took a long time to get the pot at all and even longer to get them to put herbs in it, they just want water and food in the pot. Can someone help?

Have your villagers complete the herb mastery puzzle - study each of the six plants to complete it. Then, once a villager starts a stew at the cauldron, villagers put on herbs will gather them for the stew rather than study them.

Yes, that is correct. Also be aware that there is a patch coming out soon to correct an error in the AI behavior of the farmers.

Things that you can do to survive until you have attained level 3 farming would include:
- keeping your village population at 15 or less;
- gathering mushrooms with your kids, you can use the numbers pad with the numlock on to zip around and search the island quickly;
- and if food is almost zero you can pause the game and mushrooms will still appear and vanish when the game is paused, so just wait for them and drop 4 or more kids on the mushrooms then unpause the game to collect multiple mushrooms.
