One last thing, about the Book of Laws I mentioned. I'm thinking that you would have a couple categories with sliding scales (say, 1 to 10) to indicate you strongly approve or disapprove of such a thing. Say 10 is approve, 1 disapprove. Anything at the 10 or 1 scale means it is non-negotiable in the religion. Something around a 5 or 6 means that such things could be justified.

Examples:

Faith
Reason
Evangelism
Individuality
Violence
Sex
Stealing
Ecology
Charity

Christianity (according to Jesus)
Faith 10
Reason 8
Evangelism 10
Individuality 10
Violence 1
Sex 5
Stealing 1
Ecology 10
Charity 10

This religion would conquer no territory. In fact, people following these beliefs would be easily conquered by other faiths. However, the conquerers would have a high risk of being converted to the faith.

Christianity (according to Republicans)
Faith 10
Reason 1
Evangelism 10
Individuality 10
Violence 10
Sex 1
Stealing 5
Ecology 1
Charity 1

This sort of religion would have poor development of science and the economy. Sexual repression would increase the anger levels of the believers. High violence and evangelism levels lead to war. With stealing at a 5, theft could be easily justified if a matter of faith. Reason is low so there is no governing of religious fervor. Faith is at a 10 so a great many crazy things could be justified. Charity is at a 1 so poverty will be rampant. The discontent levels will breed many heretics who will then be subsequently persecuted by the believers. Everyone is pulling their own way with high individualism so again, a disunity of action.

Islam (according to kooks)
Faith 10
Reason 1
Evangelism 10
Individuality 1
Violence 10
Sex 1
Stealing 1
Ecology 1
Charity 1

Lots of expansion through war. Little regard for human life.

Islam (according to moderates)
Faith 10
Reason 2
Evangelism 8
Individuality 3
Violence 3
Sex 2
Stealing 1
Ecology 7
Charity 10

Buddhism
Faith 5
Reason 10
Evangelism 1
Individuality 5
Violence 1
Sex 5
Stealing 1
Ecology 10
Charity 10

Romanesque Religion
Faith 3
Reason 10
Evangelism 1
Individuality 10
Violence 1
Sex 10
Stealing 1
Ecology 10
Charity 10

There probably needs to be one or two more sliders on there. Christian and Muslim fundamentalists are pretty similar in many regards but there are still significant differences on a few areas. "Tolerance" would be a good addition. Probably also "Ends Justify Means".

It would take some balancing to get the behaviors right. Groups like the Amish are highly conformist but use non-violent means of persuasion such as shunning. Groups with similar conformist tendancies but with high violence levels would use more active means of enforcing doctrinaire belief.
