I'm running Windows 7 on my PC and use the Snipping Tool (which I've pinned to my taskbar). It's a piece of cake and I don't have to paste the image into any image editor.

On my iMac, Shift+Control+3 for the entire desktop, or Shift+Control+4 for just a particular portion. Again, no need for additional software.
