You have to prepare the feast in the right order.

1) 3 herbs
2) Food from bin
3) 4 special items (mushroom, fruit, berries, fish)
4) Food from bin again
If you try to do step 3 before steps 1 and 2 are complete (in the pot), they will take the food to the bin instead of adding it to the stew.

Hint: I also get a second rock warming as soon as the first one is taken to the pot, in case the stew gets cold before they get everything into the pot. If the stew is cold, they can't add things to complete it.
