Had 2 villagers "leap-frogging" each other and the butterflies followed until they get to the Mausoleaum area where the kids "play in the dirt" then the butterflies go back to the plant by the side of the stream. ...
I think you just were going too fast at one moment. If the butterflies followed your villager until this point, they'll follow him until the tree!!
