It looks like you can select villagers for something, and it looks like it has a dock so maybe you can build a raft, for fishing or exploring or both maybe.

I'm guessing they'll get to that eventually. but compare the first screen shots and the one that shows the map in this set. Kind of hard to imagine them together. Looks like we might be able to fish, and we know about where it is. It looks like you can select a nursing villager. I wonder if there will be a cheif? And what's the purple thing in the water?

I love the mausoleum. Very cool that we can see pics of our favorite villagers to remind us who they were. I am hoping that the select 5 villagers means that we can make little family units... Thank you for the update and the screenshots! They were definitely worth waiting for Now I am anxiously awaiting the next step

Just a thought...
Maybe the select 5 villagers screen means we get to hand pick our first villagers, like picking our first adoptee in VF...

Dendrology- the study of woody plants, aka trees/bushes. Might be interesting. Has anyone noticed theres a wood dowel thing roped to that piece of rock? Wonder what its for...

Thanks so much for the new screen shots LDW. They are superb. I too am wondering about the pole almost like a swing attached to the rocks. That is mind boggling and a dock that obviously needs some repair. As for the mausoleum I love the fact that we will have the pics in previous games I would have trouble after awhile what the person looked like and putting a face to the name. I also like the accept reject button for the villagers. since we will only be able to have 5 to start apparently it is good we can pick and choose to get a rather fair mix for the jobs that we need to have done. As with the 1st screen shot I see lots of possibilities for puzzles to be solved and tasks to be accomplished. So it should be a really incredible game. I hope the next news we hear from LDW will be the date and time that we can start purchasing because with the latest screen shots I have enough food for my over active imagination. And I am anticipating hours and hours of fun.

Kods in the gravesite, that's different. But you can tell from the screeneys why it took the extra time, on top of them having a baby

Beta testing is the final stage before the game is released. When a program is first written it is tested only by a few people, usually all within the company. That's called an alpha release. It is then tested by a larger group of people who look out for bugs and make suggestions for possible improvements. That's the beta release. Sometimes a company can make several beta releases available in fairly quick succession for re-testing as bugs are fixed and areas are polished up. The main advantage of the larger group is that they can find out how it runs on a variety of computers, and it is more likely that bugs will be spotted. Some beta tests are "open betas", which anyone can join in so long as they don't mind using unfinished software. LDW, though, uses "closed betas", where they invite the testers individully. See the Beta Testing thread for more information. Don't get too excited because it's in the final stage and expect VV4 to be out tomorrow! There really is no way for the developer to tell when a beta test will be over, because it depends a lot on bugs found and their severity. I've taken part in several beta tests for other software, and the testing periods ranged from a couple of weeks to over a year.

I can see from all the posts that the servers for LDW are going to be busy the first day of release. Everyone is lining up for their copy of the game; and, I think, three will be plenty who will not do the trial.
Me, I'm going straight for the full download; don't need trials for LDW games.

I know! I just saw the screenshots, and they look awesome! By the way, arnie, I was wondering if you have graphic designers in your company. I want to be a game designer(mostly for graphics) and I don't know much about designing games, though I have used my dad's old software, Bryce2, but I'm not that good.
I wonder what the selecting villagers thing is for? Maybe you can select the people to start your tribe! Or it could be for selecing a family. I AM SOOOO EXITED!!!!!!!

Over a year!?! Oh man! I really hope not! I can't WAIT to get my hands on this game! I've been dying for it, ever since I "finished" my first full game of VV3! I'm excited, ignited, on fire with my greed! I so want this game! Can't you all feel my need? It looks so intriguing! I just can't wait to play! I'll just sit here waiting, for that glorious day! When I get to download it! To play hours on end! To come to the forum, again and again. For help I will come, or to just share my joy. Over the thrilling new tricks, I will want to employ! Thank you LDW! Thank you indeed! Now please hurry up! Can't you just feel our need?

Not only does LDW provide us with quality games and fantastic customer service, they also improve our vocabulary! I had no IDEA what "dendrology" was! I feel smarter now!
Starting tomorrow, I have 3 weeks of vacation. I can't think of a better way to spend it!
If it's NOT out by then (and I'd rather have the most perfect game they can make and wait a bit, rather than get a half-done one with lots of problems now), I will just enjoy it that much longer, playing before and after work.
The screen shots are amazing!! Oh what fun to have new peeps to play with!

Not only does LDW provide us with quality games and fantastic customer service, they also improve our vocabulary! Yes!!! I saw "Mausoleum" in one of the screenshots and looked it up! It means "a large tomb" or something like that. P.S. Please don't call me stupid just because I didn't know what is a mausoleum, I'm only 10 years old!

I've never seen a gamma release, but some software I've tested does move from beta to RC release (Release Candidate) when the developer feels the program is almost ready to be released but not quite. Generally, no new features will be added but some bugs might still need to be squashed. I'm sure Arthur won't do that, though! Please don't call me stupid just because I didn't know what is a mausoleum, I'm only 10 years old! There's nothing stupid about not knowing what a mausoleum is. I'm sure that plenty of adults don't know the word either. What proves that you're not stupid is that you looked it up.

What a nice surprise! I've been flat out and only remembering to come here every couple of days. So it looks like we get to hand-pick our starting villagers. Nice! I wonder if we HAVE to choose a woman nursing a baby? I'd rather have her work for a while, but I've managed for 3 games so far, so I guess I'll manage again The main picture looks so different now that it's in colour. What IS that orange glow that's coming from inside the cave? At least, it looks like it's coming from a cave behind/beside him. Is the chief calling the villagers to follow him, is he standing there and watching over them, or is he bidding them goodbye? I really like the interface going across the top and bottom of the screen. Seems like you can see more, and could be easier for scrolling longer distances too. Good luck to the testers and to the bug fixers

So it looks like we get to hand-pick our starting villagers. That would be fun, although it might cause some problems with some people new to the VV games. Imagine if they picked all five as mothers with a baby for instance! The poor things would starve to death in short order. (Unless mothers can do more things in VV4 than in earlier versions.) Or if they picked all women or all men ... I expect an all-kids group might survive on mushrooms alone and might be able to find enough duplicate collectibles to get some extra tech points, but it would be touch-and-go.

I suspect you're right; you won't have much time to play VV after the arrival. I suppose the release of the new game is a little like that. The doctors might predict a date, but you can be never sure of the exact day of arrival. If you can, do pop back to keep us informed.

(double joy)yeah! please keep us posted? Just maybe ... the selecting villagers thing is to select a group of villagers who will go on safari in the woods or on a raft fishing at sea??? anybody wonders about the doc that needs repair? Seems to me there can be a boat or raft that picks villagers up just there to go fishing? rafting? All those screenies look so intriquing ... Can't wait is what you hear a lot these days, but still we will AND we do ...

Thanks guys! I imagine I'll get some playing in while the baby sleeps, lol. I'm having a little girl and am most anxiously awaiting her arrival. As Arnie said, some dates just aren't predictable, so it cuold be another couple of weeks yet. I am now home relaxing on mat leave so it would be lovely to play vv4 beforehand!

I would imagine that the tutorial/help that the games thus far have provided would continue to be a feature in this game, and if the hand-picking villagers idea rings true, I'm sure the game would suggest a good combination of kids, women and men.

In the "grayed out" portion of learning, there is a water wheel. Wonder what this could mean. Does it have something to do with the first screen shot and we saw what appeared to be a dried up river bed running to the tree? Hmm, got my curiosity going.
And I think maybe the pick 5 is your starting villagers. When you compare the ones pictured to the ones in the water at what is clearly the start of the game, at least 2 of the 3 are the same as the pick 5 shown.

New pictures and it is at 100%!The beta testers are so lucky to have the game right now! I hope there isn't any problems in the game so they finish faster. Now off to the Fortress went Barb Lady Fair. She checked the Keyboard of Justice, and the other tools there. Ascended, she then, to a very big chair! She had Mac's on the Right, and on the left were PC's! A wall full of monitors, to assess what she sees! Then in a very soft voice, that yet rang in the air, Summoned forth Princess Geeks, to enter the Lair!
Then in dashed young Krystal and her close friend HP! Riding Shiny new Laptops, and dancing with glee! They held high Laser Mouses, and the latest Smart Phones, And started looking for Beta's to help sing their song. For by singing a chant, and chanting in rhyme, they could quickly destroy any bugs that they find! Quick! Everyone start humming to help those lucky beta's destroy those nasty bugs!

WOW! This is sweet. Thanks a bunch for the update. I can see from all the posts that the servers for LDW are going to be busy the first day of release. Everyone is lining up for their copy of the game; and, I think, three will be plenty who will not do the trial. Me, I'm going straight for the full download; don't need trials for LDW games. Right there with you. Any idea if this will be released on Big Fish? I have game credits there, but will buy it here first if it will take too long for BF to get it. P.S. Please don't call me stupid just because I didn't know what is a mausoleum, I'm only 10 years old! The only reason I know what it is is because I read a lot. If it wasn't for that, I would have to look it up to. And I am 34. lol. The fact that you looked it up shows how smart you are. I expect an all-kids group might survive on mushrooms alone and might be able to find enough duplicate collectibles to get some extra tech points, but it would be touch-and-go. Thanks for putting that idea in my head. Now I will have to try it. After I beat the game once though

This looks like it will be yet another amazing VV game I can't wait. I barely ever have free time to play games on the computer anymore but for this, I'll make time =)
But I'm a bit confused. Where is everyone seeing that they are 100% done? The website I;'m looking at only says 98% ....

I wonder if the water wheel creates some form of electricity. Or if it relates to the swing think on the rock, or the dock.

WOW! The screenshots are amazing! It seems that the 2-month delay did make a very magnificent VV4!! Can't wait!!
OOH! I already have predictions based on the Tech screenie: Dendrology- obviously needed for the "Tree of Life" Food Mastery - to avoid poisonous food/ gather better food?? Science - Lvl 3 needed for astronomy - also something to do with the "Tree of Life" Medicine - solve the very low fertility rate/ something to do with the Tree of "LIFE" Construction - to build huts or an observatory?? Learning - To help build this wheel near the waterfall??

But look closely on the happy couple holding hands together with flowers between them on the medicine screen! Plus, they're wearing white.
I guess if it really meant Marriages, they could have posted a screenshot about it.

Just had to pop in to practice my "EXCITED" typing technic when they announce the game has been released. The song... "I'm waiting... (I'm waiting) for the game I love..." comes to mind (Snow White & Seven Dwarfs tune) roflmbo Actually, just cheering the team on while pacing the floor outside their offices. You know what they say about the "squeaky wheel". Are we squeaking too loud? LOL LOVINGLY An Old Anxious Granny! tee-hee

I hope there's night and day. I also like the idea of a telescope being built ( look at the science technology. I also want to be able to train doctors. I think it is distinctly possible that there will be day and night in this game. Remember, they introduced it in Virtual Families for the first time. If there IS astronomy involved in some way, how cool is it that we could only advance in the skill during the nighttime hours while the stars are visible. This would add a whole new interesting wrinkle to the game dont you think?

yep agree, there IS a telescope on the science-screen, but before stars beeing able to show themselves it HAS to be night ... oooooooooh my I'm getting more excited and curious every minute ... [ JUMPING UP AND DOWN...] Yes!!! I saw "Mausoleum" in one of the screenshots and looked it up! It means "a large tomb" or something like that.P.S. Please don't call me stupid just because I didn't know what is a mausoleum, I'm only 10 years old! I never would have guessed you are 10 years old, you are SOOO smart!! please remember IsolaGirl: There ARE no stupid questions, ONLY stupid answers btw: I looked it up myself too

I had the same problem. Try going to the preview page and then press your browser's refresh button, worked for me maybe it will for you too. Thanks that worked for me too. I was looking at the virtual villagers website not the ldw site. But the LDW site does say 100% without having to refresh... Can't wait!

I wonder if we can build a large hut in this game. I also wonder if mr. Boggles is going to be in it. And what's the special liquid ( stew, potions for vv2, vv3.) or maybe both.

when looking at all the tech sceenie did anyone notice under science what looked like the blueprint board as in vv3 it right before the telescope and in farming the different modes of transport sure is intriquing so much that appears to be new but i still wonder what the collections will be and what the special puzzle will be. am already getting ready to camp out at puter to get in line for the game once i know the day and time. way to go ldw

Maybe the villagers will have to build something really big like the statue in VV3 or something like the bath.In the screen shot with the beach where the rocks are might be a place for some kind of big project. Also, I hope there is night and new food resources. Lets see we already know that they will be able to fish...

yes it did and we had to work on the tech etc. to get rid of it. there will in all likelyhood be some disaster we will have to deal with to feed our villagers; algae in vv2 the sharks in vv3 also in vv2 we had the birds to get rid of so we could get the crops instead of them.
hey i just noticed in the beach scene a second rock formation with what appears to be a bamboo swing thing on it too. curiouser and curiouser

Did anyone notice how in the drawing there are three rock formations just like the ones in the screen shot, but it only shows two but whatever. Just thought that was neat. Oh and now I am definatly sure there is going to be daylight and night because when I looked at the tech screen shot, on the last level of dendrology it shows a moon with a star on the left corner and a sun on the right corner. I am so happy!

Also, if you look in part of the greyed out part of the Science tech, you can see a villager with a telescope! And I don't think those are blueprints in the middle part of Science. It looks more like a blackboard, because if you look at it close enough, there's diagrams and scientific formula and a drawing of a telescope. I'm getting SO EXCITED!!!!

I personally highly doubt that anything that you immediately connect with another of the VV games (i.e. gong, GC, statue) will be repeated. It's just not LDW's style.

The possibility of day and night in VV4 is great since there is a telescope.
The 3 rock formations on the map in the sea reflects the 2 rock formations in another screenshot where they are trying to fish. Must be something significant to a puzzle.
Oh yeah! The 1st sneak peek shows a tribal chief over a tribe in the night. the huts are lighting.

The rocks from the fishing preview are not the same as the three little ones in the one with the 'chief'. The ones in the fishing preview are too close to the dock!

What's the big deal about night and day? I personaly would hate to see night time. Would be a pain to find collectables in the dark. Plus, wouldn't your villagers need to sleep?

beta is "in-trying" or LDW stuff is now trying the game whether it has bugs or not. :-). You guys just can imagine how EXCITED i am about this!. Since the first preview by Carla, we took 47 days for next preview, and also from 98 - 100% I hope that the game wouldn't release 47 days after this preview were posted, and i believe, it will released soon I still love those screenshots! The mausoleum rocks! Yeah, it is more 'modern' than the roster of the dead in VV3. I also spots some "wooden jetty" like thing. And also, the sea looks deeper when the wooden jetty is there! LDW are so genius I have a guaranteed that VIRTUAL VILLAGERS SERIES will be a grand hit for gamers since the released of 4th installment. This is because the differences between each game, and also, LDW makes us curious on every mysteries and stories in the game, and make us want to know more about Isola!

I just noticed in the 3 screen shot, there is a button for trophies. I don't remember that being an option before. Wonder, is it for reaching mile stones for things we control such as reaching a certain population or collecting so many mushrooms? Are they earned by things we don't have so much control over such as villagers that have accomplished a certain task such as caught so many fish etc....the possibilities are endless.

maybe its like vv3 where you got recognition ...trophies or achievements or whatever they were called... for doing things like getting 1,000,000 tech point or collecting 500 mushrooms or what have you.

Was thinking about the kids in the mausoleum and it led me to a theory. I think we have all made the assumption that that screen shot was from later in the game after we have lost some villagers. But suppose it is from the start of the game and those are the villagers that inhabited that portion of the island before our new tribes arrival and our new tribe has buried them.
Our new friends arrive in some fashion that has stranded them and they find the whole island dead or dying at the start of the game, including those villagers they had to bury. They then disscover the "Tree Of Life" is not giving off the energy it once did to substain life and their only chance for survival is to find out and correct whatever is killing the "Tree of Life"

nice thought however how would they know the names of the dead. of course i suppose they could have given them any old name. i rather think they are tribe members there are events which can claim lives if we choose wrong and if the one that gets the event is a child which has occurred in other vv games the child could have died.

I have an idea. If there is night time then maybe all of the collectables glow in the dark when it is night.Like in the daytime the mushrooms look normal but at night they glow so you can find them.

That thought is nicer than what I suspect might actually account for the children in the mausoleum. I suspect that either one of their trial tribes died en masse or that a tribe was allowed to die in order to test the mausoleum's programming (and show us greedy fans a screenshot depicting what the mausoleum will look like after we have a few villagers in it of course. )

Perhaps but I wouldn't count on it. It would be a little difficult to see the sky if the only thing we see is the village.
I wonder if the wheel from the tech screen shot goes on the river?

Hey everyone, if you haven't played Virtual Families you should - it becomes night in that game and I am assuming the moon keeps things lit enough so that collectibles are easily found even at night...no worries if there is a day/night type thing within VV 4 you can still find collectibles! I like the nighttime aspect of it.
Waiting on pins and needles!!! Tried VF. I didn't care for it. Bought it for my mom though. She loves it. I can understand why people want day and night, it would be a neat feature. I am just saying that I wouldn't want it in game unless your villagers had to sleep. Having them work all night long without a rest would ruin the game for me. Sorry if that sounds selfish.

Sorry if that sounds selfish. That doesn't sound selfish. I am with you on not particularly caring whether there is a day/night. I would be a bit frustrated to have 8 hrs pass with little or no research gained when attempting to solve the inevitable food crisis because all my little people were sleeping. At the same time, if there was night and I didn't let my little friends sleep, I would feel a bit cruel.

Check out Gamezebo. The preview page talks about the tree of Life! We must be getting closer............ Thanks for the heads up! Awesome preview, now even more excited than before. Makes me think that a nursing mom will be able to do something (collect food), hard to think they would give you the ability to choose a tribe of nursing moms that would just starve to death. Probably a ready food source as well, in the event you do have your tribe start with nursing moms, they probably couldn't work for the food so you would have to have enough to last a couple of years.

Ooooh! That preview is pretty good. It actually makes me more inclined to get the game, once it's out. I've had a few doubts (some of you may know that I turned down VV3 because of such doubts) but that preview cleared up at least one of them!!

OMG -- BETA at 100% (jumping up & down, squeeling) Can we make old people, like Mois', crawl on the floor begging, in excitement, mind you ... to GIT-R-DONE anymore than I've already done behind this screen for the past week??? LOL Have bucks... will spend! BTW -- hope y'all have a good sense of humor as that was meant in the most loving & praising way!

I love the sneak peak from gamezebo.com. It makes me have something to think about until the game actually comes out.

Anyway, from one of the screenshots, looks like there will be even more clothing variety than before. Oh yea, anybody else wondering what that stick with rope on the rock in the ocean screenshot is?

Our dear Queen Carla was kind enough to go ahead and open the forum for Virtual Villagers 4: The Tree of Life early. In it, she invites us all to "discuss the sneak peak images and what not," in the forum. Since this thread continues to draw speculative, and totally off topic comments, I'm going to go ahead and lock it.
