The problem with multiplayer games is how much it costs to run them. Look at this forum. Remember how the whole thing crashed several times right after VV3 came out? That's because the server that hosts the forum couldn't handle that many visitors. I guess you could think of a multiplayer game as being similar to a forum. People have to login to the server, which hosts the multiplayer game, and that is how they connect to other players. A multiplayer game requires many servers. One server couldn't hope to handle that kind of load. Servers cost a lot of money both to purchase and to maintain. You can rent servers, but this generally is both expensive and unreliable. You are basically in the hands of another company, which owns the server, and if something goes wrong you can't do anything but wait for that company to handle it. To OWN a server you first need a place to put it. Those things are HUGE! Then there's the cost of purchasing one. A server costs several thousand dollars. There's just no way this would be profitable for a small game company. Sometimes multiplayer games turn out to be either unprofitable or unmanageable even for huge game companies that can afford to take the loss.

I don't see multiplayer happening, really. Tying all that together, as Tuna mentioned, is no small task. The money to get and maintain the server is the problem, and you may have to maintain that server long after the game is no longer profitable. If that happens, the multiplayer component is nothing but a financial drain. If you cut off the service early because of this, it only makes the company look less professional to gamers.
Unless multiplayer is a major component of the game (FPS, RTS, and MMO games, mostly, with some RPG's thrown in) then the potential gain is often just not worth the risk you're taking, especially if you're not a larger company, and/or you're without the resources to absorb losses like that.
PS: Even a 'friend code' component requires a server to link all the games together, and to store tribe data in case that friend isn't online.

How about a multiplayer version that's played on a console, no internet required, system?

How about a multiplayer version that's played on a console, no internet required, system? Still needs servers. How do you think people connect to each other on consoles? It's all through servers.

I think she means multiplayer on one screen, with multiple controllers. Which would drive me bonkers. There are some ways of making a serverless network; they usually use high-bandwidth users as servers, or link users directly, if inefficiently, to each other through independently maintained websites that can coordinate groups of players. Needless to say, such things may be suited to file sharing, but are unsuitable for games, and often annoying to gamers. (The former method is used by applications such as Kazaa and Limewire, the latter by the protocol Bittorrent.)

You will miss the fun, like you cannot do all the puzzles. I don't like this idea

how about
"Virtual Villagers A villagers life" on nintendo ds you can become a villager and build, rersearch, and forage and you have puzzles like PC virtual villagers except you play a game to get percentage done on a building site, gain tech points, and gain food
research could have a maze game
building- has a game like below B=broken wood W= good wood
BBBWB BBBBB BBBBB play five rounds to get 1 percent of the hut done
farming like above except with food and only 2 rounds
you can customize the village the way you want it
it can have wi-fi so you can help other people or just check out there village
like the idea?

You know what might work as a kind of multiplayer? I think I saw this on at least one other site. Playing clubs. Instead of a global leaderboard, you (the player) can create one for just the people you want to play "against." It still requires a server, but isn't as draining on resources, since people only connect to update their stats. Might be a way to both fix and bring back the leaderboards.

I'd really love multiplayer, but, as Tuna Puzzler mentioned, LDW doesn't have the money or resources to fully run it for a while. What I am thinking though, is that if you could only connect to the server through a game, etc, VV4, the profits that come out of the game could be used to help fund the server. Giving it very sercure protection against "game pirates" could stop people accessing the server if they own a pirated copy. That way, the only people who are playing are people who have payed for their copy. Taking it further, LDW could charge a seperate cost for the multiplayer game itself, meaning that it would be easier to afford, but with a few less players. An update could be installed every once in a while to make sure that there are no patches, serials or "key generators" that will continue to work.

I was wondering if you could make like a VV multiplayer game, where people could make their own villagers, choose the hair and clothes and gender, make a username, buy a hut, decorate it,and chat. You could use the island from one of the VV games,or make a new one,and if people find this it could bring a LOT of new customers. nonononnono i think it would be to much like there would be servers and a lot of people will be on one and it will make ur computer lagg and be all slow and wat not

I'm a he... lailai is a Chinese name.
Also, what LDW could consider is nonoba. Its free multiplayer platform. However, it's flash and heavly-branded.
