Thanks for all the help I got to finish the game. After I solved the 12th puzzle (thanks to Lady Barbara) I let the game run to see what would happen. They're happy, they exist in my Palm and that's enough for them. Unfortunately I had a minor disaster (small tsumani) creating beach debris, and I didn't realize that they can't fish on a dirty beach, so when I opened the game today my population count was down and I'm out of food. I'll post my stats in the stats thread.
