I would think you would put your person on the fire or in the 'garage' so they can get some tool to fix it.

There's a fire extinguisher in the shed.

Drop your person on the doorknob in the sandbox. Once they add the doorknob to the shed, pick them up again and drop them on the welcome mat (the key is hidden underneath). Once they unlock it, you'll have access to the items in the shed.
