Jacie, I wouldn't be too rigid with following suggestions that others give. A lot of us have been playing with lots of trial and error. Every village seems to play a little differently. Some villagers take to certain tasks better than others, so it is not always possible to follow the same strategy as a previous game. At the stage you are at, I babysit my villagers quite a bit. I have as many as I can spare on food gathering, and once this seems to be under control (they stop complaining about the food being low), I gradually start the better researchers back at the table. I don't like leaving the game unattended for too long either, as they don't always like sticking to the job you want them to stick to.
I am usually in a dilemma between which tech to buy out of harvesting, science and medicine. They are all good, and it usually depends on which area the villagers seem to need a boost on, as to which I pick. Harvesting gives them new and more plentiful food sources, Science helps them build points faster and medicine helps them live longer and healthier.
Play a bit and see what strategy you like best
