I think that fixing hut gieves some skill but not examining hut! not sure of course  when the hut is in good repair, normaly that means there is nothing to do so no skill to gain! Each time one of my builders "examines" a hut I re-put him until he fixes it!

I think laurence is right: "examining" a hut gives no skill at all. If I see a villager "examining", I too will pick him up and drop him on the hut again until the action line says "fixing". This may take two or three goes.

You really don't need to test it. A simple forum search on the word "examining" will do just fine. It's worked this way since waaaaaaay back in Village Sim.

Only fixing rewards your tribe member. If you continually pick up your villager and drop him on the hut he will fix it. I was able to get my first totem doing this since there was nothing at the time to build.
