Your choices about reproduction (maybe spoilers)

What does everyone look for when they want another child in their village? What do you try to avoid? Of course it's as unpredictable as real life, but what have you tried and what have you ended up with?
Do you choose two of the most successful villagers to match up? Do you choose the most attractive? Do you try to find two who "match", either in skills or looks, or do you prefer to be surprised by the offspring?
I've seen mentions of people trying to get a village of just redheads, or just blondes. Has anyone been successful in getting a village completely of one hair color?
What about in reproducing certain likes or dislikes? Like a love of the ocean, or a dislike of resting?
What has the Gong done to mess up your plans?
I finally got a male runner in one of my villages - a village with no male elders at the moment. Once he turned 17 I sat at my computer waiting for him to turn 18, so I could have him "kiss" with every reasonably successful woman in the village. I am hoping at least ONE of the babies will also be a runner - he currently has 5 babies still being nursed, so we'll see. Anyone ever succeed in having a village full of runners?
I have one village right now where I'm distinguishing the ages by decade, by trying for different hair colors. Most of the 40 year olds have brown hair, most of the 30s have red, most of the 20s have black, etc. Of course its not perfect, you can't guarantee hair color, but it adds challenge while I sit around waiting for collectables.
I had one village where EVERY female in the village had a baby by one single man while my back was turned. He was NOT set to parenting! That messed up a lot of planning. Every one of the kids was born skilled in the same area. Made for quite a crowd around the research table the next time I checked on them. And half of them looked alike, so it cost tech points to dress them differently so I could tell them apart.
In another village I was carefully matching Elders with each other when I realized they all had the same hair. I wanted a couple kids to look different, so I found some with different hair and matched them up with no intention other than to hopefully have a red-headed kid. And of course THAT was the time I got triplets!
One time the Gong granted me a LOT of kids all at once. Too bad they were all stupid.
So what are you trying? And what are you getting?

I find that the longer I allow the game to run, my little people seem to find the "love of their life" on their own. Many times I spot little ones who seem rather "friendly." Or older men and women who seem to prefer each other's company.

Assigned parents really love their job. I'm sure most of you have seen them go indoors, come back out kiss and go indoors again. This morning I was following trainee mother Luna around when I heard a kiss. Looks like she heard it too, she headed straight for the indoor hut and arrived just in time to see a couple come out, kiss and start going indoors again. Before they got there Luna intercepted the man, kissed him and went inside with them. Luna had a baby.

Villagers with dislikes are not welcome in my village. Even if they dislike laundry they are fed the death stew at two years old. Take care! If you dislike the "dislikes", one day somebody will prepare a stew for you! (don't do to the others...)

Wow! How sad to kill them at age two. I have a villager who hates swimming and became a master farmer in no time! She later became an elder. I had a villager who disliked running and with some love and attention became an elder when he was 50. So there is always hope

What if the kid dislikes something harmless, like red, or blue, or papayas? Do you use the Final Solution on them too? What about those who have likes that are not very useful, like resting or laundry? Do they get murdered, or is it only dislikes you dislike? Oh, wait. Perhaps if you have a dislike of dislikes, perhaps you should kill yourself.

I certainly hope that you are joking with that last sentence, arnie. And WillieWonka, if you get that bored with a village that you just keep killing people, maybe you should start a new one!

Good point Laurence.
As a matter of fact, my wife made stew for dinner tonight. I guess I'd better wait for her to have 5 bites before digging in.

People, Please don't think I am an evil man. It's just I feel I've done just about everything I can so in order to keep it more interesting lately, I try to maintain 117 villagers with as few men as possible. The least I can get down to is six men. It was actually only one man but there were 22 pregnant women which gave me 5 boys.
I guess I'm just trying to push my luck to where a miracle would have to happen or my game would end. Any ideas?
What else can I do? Just go for higher rankings I guess. But I'm in the top 100 in every category and in the top 12 in nine of them.
I did start another game but I'd rather this one end first because there are certain things I'd like to try but wouldn't want to have to jump back and forth between villages.
Thanks for the input, Bill

One more thing.
My max population is 117 but I'm not ranked first.
This means I must maintain 117 and wait for an event to possibly get higher.
That's my theory anyway.

I rang the gong yesterday, and ended up with all my non-pregnant females getting pregnant....one with triplets! It put me at 92 people! What's weird is when you click on them, it shows the momma with a 'generic' looking dad with "?" as his name. Today when I rang the gong, it took the life of the gong-ringer! Its a moody thing! Any clues on how to get runners? I loved the one I had, and he just died at 77. I wish all men were like that! I had a problem with a man thinking he was a 'stud-muffin', and knocking up my women as soon as they turned 18! It was funny to watch him 'working' the village, kinda reminded me of an old boyfriend I once had!

haha mochajew. williewonka - to make your game start "ending" : - put it in 2x speed - make sure no one is on a "parent" setting - leave it alone for about a week, most will have died after 3 (our) days
sounds bad, i know. but he asked.

i have done hair type and clothing villages, but i stay with this game to crack the 'likes running/work, dislikes resting/laundry' code. i have gotten up to four runners at a time, and the more i work on it the more i think there may well be some idiosyncratic way to increase them. its true it rarely inherits down directly ... but all code has a logic unless the choice for running was specially set for random. i have seen too many times that a dislike of running is direcly inherited to think that liking running would not be likewise doable - though admittedly it must be very arcane my biggest hope for VV3 is that the programmers will intentionally work on the genetic heritability point and make it part of the game.

In VV2, the genetics and inherited traits are limited to the villagers' physical appearance. Likes and dislikes are still pretty random.

Here is my system of family tree mapping, which helps reduce certain types of in-breeding for those concerned with it.
My initial males get clan names added to their names, and kinship is patrilineal, though it could easily be the other way. Each breeding male gets 1 to 4 wives with whom he produces 2 to 6 offspring all bearing his clan name. All offspring from any one mother have first names starting with the same letter.
I also record my trees on paper to keep things clear, but full siblings will have names starting with the same letter, and nobody with the same clan name marries unless it cannot be helped, and then it would be cousins or aunt/nephew or uncle/neice. I don't allow parent/child or sibling or half sibling marriages. I try to keep them partnered for life, but with multiple wives. Occasionally if a married male dies and one of the wives is young or has few children, then she will get a second husband and family.
My non-breeding males work only, as do my non-breeding females, though there are fewer of them.
Here is an example:
Nambit Eagle
1. Lennea Wolf: Fezwit Eagle, Fernella Eagle, Fionah Eagle 2. Mahana Wolf: Aykum Eagle, Ayruk Eagle, Alannah Eagle
Taurak Raven
1. Mahinah Wolf: Elora Raven, Elaynah Raven, Evrik Raven
So, of the 2nd generation none of the 6 Eagles would marry, being siblings or half siblings, but a Raven kid could marry an Eagle kid even though they might be cousins (Mahana and Mahinah being full sisters).

paper geneology is definately going to be a great help to those who feel like it. i find if i have paused the game for a few days i have to re-figure out everyone's geneology if i am not careful. putting it on paper(or excel, etc) would help a lot.

I searched and I searched but no match could be found to equal my runner fast as a hound. I'll try and I'll try to pass on this skill I'll try and I'll try till she's over the hill. Ok, here's what I've found: once you reach level 2 of parenting the child will usually inherit the skill of the predominant parent. Therefore, if you match two farmers (or whatever) they'll have a kid who's a farmer (or whatever). If both are masters in the same field, the kid will generally have enough skill to become a trainee right away and an adept faster than most. I've only had 1 tribe with multiple (2) runners, I paired them often (6 kids total) but NONE of them were runners. I don't even try to match hair color etc, that's too much bother for me.

I always mate villagers with the same skills, eg: farmer with farmer. I also have one of each villager having a baby/babies. Like farmer, builder, scientist and healer. that way you get a steady flow of children. It's helpful when they get to 14yrs and when they pass on. I use children to help healing and I make a stew to help with building skills.

I've noticed that some of my young kid villagers have a tiny bit of a skill bar filled... some even at two years old! Most are farming or building. I had one kid who liked medicine, so when he got old enough, I made him a doctor.
