I got the first food one, but what others should I research? Still know very little about the game.

After you research the food you must research the medicine or the engeneering because the medicine will give you longevity and the engeneering will give you a dam.

I go level 2 food, level 2 medicine then lvl 3 farming then from there it is up to you.

I use to research the food first and then the enginering to level 2 after that i research medicine and i research culture.

Level 2 farming, level 2 enginering, level 2 medicine, then level 3 farming.

I did it this way the first time i played and have experimented with all different orders but i prefer this one.

I also try to reach early the level 2 of science and so I can have tech points faster.

I am a little confused. I read somewhere in VV2 you should not buy food till later? Is this true?

The most important, at the beginning, is to build a dam to have some crops. It's level 2 of Engineering. After, it depends: Where are you in your game? What is the population, how many children? Do you play in easy, normal or hard difficulty and what is the speed?

Level 2 food, Level 2 Engineering, Level 2 exploration, (Level 2 culture or medicine) Level 3 Farming. That's when I feel lucky. Level 2 food, Level 2 engineering, and Level 3 farming are MUSTS, but exploration for dup. collectibles and sometimes I sneak culture and medicine in there. Science to me is least important, because it doesn't do much.

I think that it helps a lot to reach the other technologies, at least the 2nd level of science.

I go for L2 Engineering to get the dam built as soon as possible. L2 Culture is the least important to me as it only gets you the sewing hut, which since new clothes cost 5,000 points, you can't afford to use yet. I normally go:
Engineering
Exploration
Science
Medicine
Farming + L3 Farming
L3 Medicine
Culture
L3 Culture
L3 Engineering
L3 Exploration
L3 Science

Do medicine and science really do much, for medicine it gives you triplets and twins, but what about science? I don't notice getting tech faster.

Medicine allows your villagers to live longer.

Science means you accoplish tech points faster and i do belive you will get more tech points every time.

I agree, it's all the more since (not sure about this expression!) the sewing-hut is in the way of the "exercise". But we need level 2 to have level 3 and to uncover the vines (and to make master builders) so I used to stop the construction of the sewing hut at 50% (or less or more).
I do the same strategy than you, except that, some time, in hard mode, I need the level 3 of farming early and so before medicine.

Another advantage of medicine is that the villagers get elderly and slow down later.

Sure! but to day 4 of my original villager are elderly and i have the level 3 of medicine. I deam of a level 4 !!
