I see little bugs, crawling around the graveyard, but the children won't pick them up.

I think that when you saw the bugs it had already been there for a while, because when the collectable's about to disappear, children can't pick it up .

The little pink things in the graveyard are falling flower petals, not the beetles that the children can collect.

You can see a screen shot of all of the collectibles in this post in the Guide Section. Only the shells and butterflies appear at the start of the game. The other two types of collectibles will appear after specific puzzles are completed.

Beetles can be found where the gong is (where the thorny bushes are)

And about my first post... I thought she meant butterflys in the graveyard! Silly me

You must first clear the thorny vines before the beetles begin to appear.
