When you have your VV1 window minimized, does that mean you will not get any events unless you leave it maximized? Also, is there a pattern on when you will get an island event based on what speed you have your game set to? Mine is at Normal speed, which I think is supposed to increase the events occuring. One last thing, just how much do your Tech Points increase per villager if you get the second level of science?
