I've been ringing it every day. One time it granted life and made some of my old folks 10 years younger, one day it took away health and 8 or 10 villagers got sick, one day it took away food (ALL 66,000 units of it!).

So far it seems there is a good chance of something pretty bad happening. But I guess I'll go on ringing it because I am always curious.

Yeah, I'm ringing it every day, just because I'm out of things to do in my 3 villages :P

On balance, I've had about as many good results from ringing the gong as bad ones. However, the good results include villagers gaining wisdom and becoming younger, whereas with the bad ones, although they sometimes cause a flurry of activity, the effects don't last too long, and can in some cases actually be beneficial.

For instance, a sudden outbreak of sickness can mean you are kept busy healing the villagers, but it helps to advance the doctors' skills. When I've had all my food wiped out I've had to pile all the working villagers, whatever their skill, into the ocean to fish, and drag any that walked out without a catch back in again. Although it meant I was busy for a while, it meant that every villager had at least some training in farming, which made it easier when things later returned to normal.

I try to ring it everyday. I've had mostly good, except when my gong took health and someone who was about to be an elder died. \:\( oh well. I don't have fifty yet, I sort of stopped around 37.

When the gong takes or grants food or technology, I never see a difference in the points for either. Is that abnormal?

There are other ways to take (or grant) food and technology. For example, you can lose food from places other than the food bin.

That's true. In fact the worst gong event I've had was a "good" one: Gong grants life. It made my old people 10 years younger, they didn't die for a long time; meanwhile no babies could be born, the existing children grew up, and for about 10 "years" I had no new children at all for picking up collectibles.
