[SPOILER] Can the GC Starve to death???

Okay this is the same village I have posted about a couple times. My hard village where we ran out of food and I had to make babies for the sole purpose of mushroom hunting just to try and keep everyone alive. For a time this village was so obsessed with food I had to mark everyone down for duties other than farming. Still they farmed they just would not stop. The food bin had well over 10,000 and then we started making babies. I allowed my villagers to choose their careers and sometimes had to prod them along. I always made sure to have 1-2 master farmers the food level went down but not to anything I would have considered startling or even anything I would consider being noticeably low. We got to 30 villagers and had to wait for the completion of a new hut before creating the Golden Child, who was villager #31. Everything was wonderful, I left the game running at half speed for a day (maybe 2) which normally I do not leave unattended more than 10-12 hours but they had the GC what could possibly go wrong???
This morning ALL the adults were DEAD. I assume they starved to death because food was at ZERO. I had 11 children some of them quite weak and I began hunting mushrooms to revive them. This was a very devastating blow. The GC kept restoring the crops and making berries but it was like pulling teeth to get him to make food. I had to find a mushroom, get a child over to it and THEN find the GC and pick him up in order to keep him from throwing yet another party (the children WILL DROP their mushroom to go to the party). It was insane. Finally he popped over to the food bin a few times and made food and we got the food above 400. Then I made yet another critical error. I assumed, okay maybe the GC needed to LEARN how to create food, now he knows how to do it, I can leave for a couple hours and leave the children to age so we can hopefully get them harvesting and making babies ASAP. I left the game at half speed. I have done this TONS of times for LONGER than I was away and with about 400 food and we have always been fine, but not today.
I just got home and the food was at 0 AGAIN and ALL my babies are dead I am so upset and a little angry at the GC and a lot angry at me , we came so far and now EVERYONE IS DEAD, well except you know who. I immediately found a mushroom and had the GC pick it. And then came here to ask, Can the Golden Child Starve to Death??? Because I was hoping that we might get a crate of babies and be able to continue this legacy. But now I am not sure I want to. The GC can not make any babies so the only legacy will be the new crate babies who will grow up to live in a village that has already been completed. They will be able to bury my dead villagers I guess. But everything else has been completed. I can not believe I was worried about this little turkey, since I have started typing this he has created 1208 food. So I guess HE will not starve to death and I was worried for NOTHING. Funny how he will create food for himself but not his Grandparents, Parents, Aunts, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters, Nieces, Nephews and so forth. I worked so hard to keep this little village alive and now I feel like I failed everyone. I could just cry. I don’t know what I will do. I guess time will tell. I can’t believe after all we have been through, they are gone. All gone. It’s over and I am so sad. I think I am going to cry.

No, the GC won't starve to death, but he also won't find a crate of babies. Events only happen if there is an adult villager around.
Also, the GC won't make food (or restore crops/create berries) unless the game is open. You you can't count on his supplying the village, no matter what speed it is.
But I'm curious, did you villagers know how to fish? I need to keep checing my "no fishing" village since they'll eat more than the crops and berries supply (without the GC), but in all my other villages, there are plenty of "natural" farmers to keep the supplies at a healthy level.

If your farmers got sick and there was nobody to heal them, it wouldn't take long before there was no food. In addition to having trained farmers, it's a good idea to have 2 trained healers (in case one gets sick) - especially on the hard setting.
It's too late now, but the game log would have told you what happened each time you lost villagers. The game log is in the Virtual Villagers folder and is called ldwLog.txt. You must check it immediately after exiting the game, however, since it is erased and rewritten each time the game is started.
The bad news is that Island Events don't occur in villages where there are only children (and the GC is a child).

But I'm curious, did you villagers know how to fish? I need to keep checing my "no fishing" village since they'll eat more than the crops and berries supply (without the GC), but in all my other villages, there are plenty of "natural" farmers to keep the supplies at a healthy level. Yes we were a little village and I think ALL of them were great fishers. Even my Master Farmer who Disliked the ocean and would run out of the water when I first dropped him in, started fishing on his own. They were all obsessed with farming/fishing so this really shocked me. Can villagers get sick when the game isn't open, because I just could not believe they all would have stopped farming but if they all got sick for some weird reason and died I could see the children eating up all the food?
I did not know that the GC did not perform when the game was closed, I still thought a bit over 400 food would be enough for 11 villagers (all children) while I was gone this afternoon, but I should not have left the game running and now I am so sad. I did not know about the no events rule without adults either so I will have to end my game and that makes me sad too. I did not want to kill my little GC even though he is a turkey.
I have never had a villager die in front of me and I always wondered how people knew how their villagers died. I will try to find the game log. I am not real computer savvy and I guess I am not very keep the villagers alive savvy either. How sad.
Thanks for the info LadyCFII and sfrose. I just did not think I would get that attached and be so devastated. I really am very sad.

quick question about the log. Is this a record of everything that happened from when you last closed the game (while it was closed) as well as the time the game was open and until it is closed again? I had no idea villagers were suffering so many injuries on the job. Holy cow. And I did get to see that all my babies starved to death after finishing off the food. Oh what an awful way to go.

Yes, the game log contains a record of what happens in the game from the time you last closed it until it is closed again. The first part of the log records the loading of the game, followed by the activities of the villagers while the game was off (those entries all have the same time stamp), followed by what happened in the game while it was running. It can be very enlightening to examine the game log. It is very sad to lose a village like that, but at least you know what happened.

And yes, villagers can get sick while the game is closed. As Barbara said, it's good to have a couple of trained healers to to cure the sick if it is going to be closed without pausing. You need two, because like one of the hints say "Who heals your healer?" I'm also sorry that you lost your tribe like that. I've lost a few early in the games, and my "no fshing" village was down to just a couple of kids several times, but with the GC's help I built up the food supply. You do get attached to them. My only problem now is when I want to start a new game, which village should I get rid of?!

Have fun showing your niece the game! It's also good to see the game from a newbie view. Watch the choices they make, joy at solving the problems.
BTW, some people find reading large block of text in alternate colors difficult. It is better to keep to black text and only use color occasioally for emphasis.
