I am unable to add any herbs to make a stew. After placing a villager to the cauldron and moving it (the message does mention preparing to make stew), I can't get the villagers to pick up the herbs. Regardless of what villager it is, they're stated as studying the plant rather than adding herb to the stew. Even exiting the game and coming back did not remedy the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Rocklobster, the plants have to be studied before they know to use them for stew. So take someone you want to be healer around to all of them, and then they'll be available for stew

Oh my goodness - it's so obvious now. Man, are my cheeks red! I guess I because I had already 'established' a healer without studying the herbs, I just completely forgot about that puzzle.
