Lots of great ideas....mine may be reiterating some already mentioned....

1) Weather: Something we can see. Something that causes us to vary how we are doing things (i.e., we can't fish during a hurricane).

2) Day/Night: Again, something we can see and which causes us to vary routine (no fishing at night, etc.).

3) Skills: More options. Also, need more building skill options (perhaps having huts fall into disrepair more often, or possibly damaged in storms).

4) Families: I'd like to have actual family units that stick together. Perhaps they get their own hut.

5) Adventures: Would be nice to have something like the ability to leave the island and have to accomplish further tasks before moving to the next island. The villagers could be on an exploration mission. So, while the regular village goes on as normal, we are now faced with following a few explorers and helping them.

6) Decisions: Need more of these. And perhaps more complex.

7) Food: Some sort of system where people have to buy food and store what they can. Then if their individual supply runs low they need to complete certain tasks to obtain more (some sort of barter maybe).
