I'm not sure what is up. I was playing fine yesterday. Last night, I paused the game, minimized the window (did not exit the game) checked my email, then went to bed. My laptop, when closed, hibernates. So a little while ago, I opened my 'puter, woke it up, and maximized the VV2 window. The game was lagging a lot, so I exited the game (using alt-f4 because the game was lurching along). The computer seemed slow so I decided to just restart. Everything booted back up, and I attempted to reopen VV2. No dice -- I get an hourglass for about 10 secs, then that goes away leaving just the black screen. It gets stuck there. If I try to exit (either alt-f4 or using the windows button to bring up the taskbar and rt-click & choose close) I get the dialog box that the program is not responding and have to choose "end now" or "cancel".

At this point I have restarted 2 more times. I have restored an earlier savegame. And I have even done a system restore to yesterday. Still VV2 is not working.

If anyone has any ideas please give them to me. I'm pretty sure the game is not paused at this point because I didn't see it say paused on the screen before I exited that first time. It was set on 2x and I don't want any disasters.

Please help.....

I will have to guess that your save game files are corrupt. You can try two things:

1. Try re-installing the game and see if that works. You will want to backup your save game files first just to be safe. If that does not work, then;

2. The first thing I would try is copy all your current save games into a backup folder. Your save game files are in a folder called "LDW" which is in "My Documents". After you have copied those files to a safe place, delete them. Then try running VV2 again. If VV2 loads then your save game files are corrupt. If so Barbra can help you try and save them, but they might be lost for good.

Thanks for your response.

I do already have backups of a couple save games. I backup the files every so often, usually after some accomplishment such as a puzzle is completed or before I purchase a tech level (in case I change my mind).

So I already tried reverting to an earlier save game. Didn't work. I had thought of reinstalling the game. But I was hoping it wouldn't come to that. I guess I'll wait a little longer and see what ideas others might have, before I go that route.

Thanks again.

Duranie, I would still suggest deleted ALL of the files in your save game folder. After you have deleted them then run VV2 and see if it works. Just reverting back to an earlier save game might not fix the problem. Give that a try.

Yippie-Skippie! Thank you Warren.
I did as you suggested and it worked!

Previously, I had replaced the save file with a copy of the backup, figuring that the deleting was happening as part of that process. This time I deleted the files as you said and then copied the backups into the then empty folder. I should have thought of that in the first place, I guess.

I'll just never understand how a file can be just fine and great one moment and corrupted the next. I used to blame it on gremlins.... but now I guess I'll have to blame the little villagers running loose in my computer. ;\)

Anyway, thanks a million!

I'm glad it worked out for you.

We have seen the save game files get corrupted when the system shuts down when VV2 is running. What you can do to make sure it does not happen again is just make sure you shut down VV2 before you shut down your computer.
