Does anyone know how to 'drop' a villager on a spot? I can drag them around the island, but I'm not sure I'm dropping them.

when you let go of the mouse button and they land, you have dropped them. is that what you mean? if this is the puzzle with the treasure chest, you have to repeatedly drop them on the right spot and eventually they find it. the right spot is a bit west of the restored ruins and a bit south of the food bin.
