Not sure if this always works..but has at leas 7/10 times for me...
If you circle your pointer around the eyes of the mask at the bottom of the screen, his eyes light up. if you keep them brightly lit for about 25 seconds, and then go searching around the island, it pops you up a collectable. either something for your collection, or a mushroom. try, if it works for you, let me know here....

everyone seems to post some insane activity that they do for 30 seconds to a couple of minutes that seems to generate collectibles. it does not take a genius to realize that collectibles appear randomly and that the average interval is about a minute or two. you could just as easily spend a minute or two scratching your bottom and it would just as effectively cause a collectible to appear. although Arthur probably won't comment, it is highly doubtful he wasted his valuable time writing code to increase the rate of collectibles if your cursor hovers over the mask for 30 seconds. When trying to get a program ready for publishing, there are too many other things that take up all your time, like fixing bugs your beta testers find, to have time to spend on the crazy things people have suggested to generate collectibles. I am beginning to think people do not believe the crazy things they write, but only write them to see how many idiots are so desperate to find the last collectible that they will try anything. If this is the case, I have heard that the best way to cause the rare collectible that you need to appear is stand outside on your front lawn at midnight, naked, loudly chanting a native indian tune, while swinging a flaming bag of poo over your head. Really, it works! Try it!

...somebody needs another cup of coffee, or his cranky pills :P
Please don't call people idiots, etc. Not knowing something doesn't make someone stupid, you know.

Shells only appear in one area, the beach. It's the butterflies that can appear ANYWHERE on the island. True, but you do have to scan up and down the beach for them instead of being able to just watch one spot.

I say again: just because someone doesn't know something, that does not make them stupid. And not knowing something, or remarking on something you find in the game - which may be quite new and puzzling to you, does not make anyone an "idiot". (Insulting people for these things is a pervasive internet board problem where braying sarcasm tries to drown out honest questioning. Guess I'm just tired of the tone. Called him on it. He insults back, with a wink. *shrugs. Nothing more to add on that subject.) *
On topic -

Please don't call people idiots, etc. Not knowing something doesn't make someone stupid, you know. True to all he said (although it could have been synthesized in one phrase), but I must agree with with you... change to decaff man...
