It happened with VVI too. Basically, the puzzles would all be solved, there would be the max # of people, the villagers are pretty much living the easy life with plenty of food and all that. SO - I just let them live. Stop in every once in awhile to make sure they are still having babies and all that. It could be days or even weeks before I stop in the check on them though. Every time I do though, they have a ton of 6 year old kids.

To be honest, concidering that 2 hours is a year, a lifetime is 150 hours, or, about 6 days. So if I don't check in on them in a week, the whole population should have gone a full lifetime so there'd be all new people. That never happens. They never age the full time that they should when I've been gone that long. That makes me think that maybe there is a maximum amount of time that can go by if you don't play. Maybe 6 years???? I'm not sure... and that wouldn't really explain it because they aren't giving birth to all the kids THE SECOND that I log off. Anyway, I suspect it has something to do with how the code ticks out long amounts of time with no actual play.
