Hello,

I heard that there's no benefit in playing 1/2 speed. Is this completely true? I wonder, because the skill gaining speed and building process seem to be the same in all the speed option. Maybe I didn't look close enough, but that's what it looks like to me. :P

Well, if you're going to be away for a little while and you haven't yet got really good reliable sources of food, might be a good idea to put it on 1/2 speed (or pause). But if you're talking about the benefit (exploit) that there used to be in VV1, it isn't there any more \:\)

However, there are differences... you get less points, for instance for fishing and coconuts on 1/2 speed than for normal, than for 2x

I always 'stop' games while I'm away. And always been playing 1/2 speed. Until I found that there's no benefit in playing 1/2 in the forum yesterday. So I switched to x2 quickly and observed for a while. I don't know about skill progress, but building process seemed to be the same whether the game mode is slow or fast. I wanted to be sure.

Ah, and one more thing: there seems to be many people with food problems, but in my game my foodstock is over 4000 (and tech 2 in farming), population 13, mushroom found about 230. I can't be sure I wouldn't be in food crisis either if I've been playing in x2 speed.

There may be, at some times, some advantage to using 1/2 speed even if you are constantly monitoring your tribe. While the value of most food items, veggies, coconuts and fish, are less in reduced speed, the values of Crabs and mushrooms of either color remain the same.

Food consumption seems to be a constant related to a village year, rather than to computer clock. So if you have a circumstance where you are relying on mushrooms for food you might consider switching to 1/2 time to gather some of these.

I've done no real testing on this, but based on casual observation, productivity (gaining Tech Points, for example) seem to be reduced greatly at 1/2 speed. I'm not so sure this is true for building projects, however. Has anyone done real tests o that? By tests, I mean setting a more or less identical crew to the same building task on two different villages, one running 1/2 speed, the other on 2x and comparing the times to do each.

While the game is open there are few differences. A nursing mother will take longer, the fire will last longer without needing to be refuelled, and the gaps between crops will be longer on the slower speeds. However, when the game is closed the differences become much more marked; a village would earn only a quarter of the tech points and make progress in a building project only a quarter as far over a given period when on half speed compared with 2 X speed.

Arnie, by "open" do you mean that a village must be active and viewable or just not paused or the game terminated? That is, can I get the same number of tech points with a given number of the same level of scientists at any game speed provided that I give it constant attention? Same with contruction projects? That is, if 4 adept builders are working to build a hut, will that take the same length of time (computer clock time) at 1/2 speed as it will at 2x if the village is "open"?

What if there were no hypothetical situations?

By 'open' I mean the program is actually running on your computer, either in a window or fullscreen. You don't need to be actively directing the villagers. When the program is paused, whether left open or subsequently closed, all action stops, although mushrooms and collectibles will still pop up and disappear if the game is left open.

After completing my collection today, I switched to x2 mode to gather tech points more quickly. Since my master scientists accumulate 5 points in one try on 1/2 mode, I expected them to do 20 points on x2 mode. But they got only 10 instead. I went back to 1/2. And never will change it again.

As I said above, you shouldn't see any difference when the game is open. However, when the game is closed they should earn tech points roughly four times faster at 2X than on half speed.

They won't gain any more points per try, they'll just get more tries in the time. The level of points earned depends on whether the scientist is untrained, a trainee, adept, or master, and also on the level of Science tech you're at.
