I can't answer for LDW, but I'd think they will make the upgrade compatible if at all possible, so you'd be able to continue playing games in progress.
A few weeks ago Arthur said in the shout box that save games from version 1.00 would not be compatible with the new release. Things may have changed since then. If I had not read Arthur's comment in the shout box, I would have thought what you thought.
