Breeding?

I had a great start with 3 women and 2 men, but strangely the first 4 babies born were boys. At this point I'm a bit concerned, because my females are all over 40 and my males are getting closed to 50. When's the end of "breeding"?
I did get two girls finally, but there's still a 10 year gap with boys/girls. I'm hoping it won't cause problems.

Some games seem to have an imbalance in the gender ratios early on, but it usually resolves itself as the game progresses - sort of like real life. You just never know if you're going to get boys or girls, and the villagers don't have ultrasound technology! The way the game works now, breeding is possible as long as the villagers are still alive!

hehe, I have three "undetermined" children right now. Luckily enough, the first born are finally starting to work, so I can keep the women in kids without worrying about food.

in a slightly related question -- Housing seems odd. I had to restart once (long story) and couldn't have more children at 7 because of housing. now at 15, I can't have anymore. If villagers can get up to 65, is there something big coming up for housing? Just curious.

Sounds like you need to encourage one of your villagers to do some building. If you already have a builder, he/she may already be working on this...but you won't be able to increase your population until the construction is completed.

A housing shortage will trigger the construction of another hut (up to 3) if you have villagers who know how to build. Construction research helps solve puzzles.

AH! I jsut dragged a 63 year old woman down to a new hut to celebrate (I didn't think that she'd make it) and accidentally dropped her on a guy and in less than a second, she was already going indoors. Of course, I stopped them since I didn't even know if the old girl was going to be around for another two years. But when I set her back down just below where she was, she had a baby in her arms! Now I have a 63 year old woman nursing a new born baby while her already red health bar continues to decrease! Poor little baby, I'm not so sure s/he'll make it to two. -spaceman

Now, I've been playing this game for a (quite a) few hours, and I've noticed something about breeding. If the breeding is going to be successful, right after the "kiss" and when they say "going indoors" if you click on their detail, the woman's will say "nursing" even if she hasn't made it indoors yet! Of course, this is probably a bug. But it makes it easy to tell if the breeding worked or not, and if you're desperate for babies, if her detail doesn't say "nursing" right away, you can drag her back on her man and try for it again right away, rather than waiting for them to slowly walk indoors and then reappear empty-handed. -Ally (look! Nope, it's not a bug (that's how the fish get pregnant in Fish Tycoon, too). As Arthur put it, the trip to the hut is symbolic! There are some real advantages to registering - you can use more of the forum tools! Welcome to the 'gang'!!

Hi all, I've been lurking around here for a day or two just reading these posts. I have been playing VS for several days now and am totally smitten. But I can't figure out how all of you get so far so quickly. Don't any of you have regular jobs? (Ha ha). My question is this: what do you mean by "Construction Research"? I thought there was just research. Do you use a trained builder to do the research, or do you get a researcher to do it? Thanks for any tips... Thanks for these forums too. I learn so much and that adds to my game experience. ----- Donna Playing Plant Tycoon, VS on a Palm Tungsten E

Someone probably just phrased their explanation somewhat ambiguously. There is only one type of 'research' - the kind that your villagers do at the research table. The points they gain by doing their research are used to achieve higher technology levels on the Village Tech screen, and building is one thing that you can spend those points on. You can click on "Info" after selecting one of the village techs and see information about that technology. The other type of advancement is to improve individual villager's skills. They do this in 5 areas - farming, research, breeding, healing, and construction - and gain skill by actually performing tasks related to a particular skill area. I hope this helps clear things up!
