is this normal or a glich ?

They are spear fishing.

Spear fishing is much quicker than when they swim out.

first you must have the cutting tools, and the master farmers will spear some fish

right, some of them are spear fishing already on their own, but is there any way to get them to do that instead of regular fishing?

I've not found a way. The villagers seem to decide on it themselves.

You would think that once all the technologies had been researched, they would figure out fishing poles, nets, crab/lobster traps and so forth. Well, maybe not lobsters (I think they are only found in cold water).

If you were stranded on an island, at some point, wouldn't you build a boat? Maybe it isn't the first thing you need to do. Maybe you aren't even building it for escape, maybe you would use it for fishing, courting the pretty ladies, or disposing of lazy villagers who dislike work by giving them a pair of cement overshoes. But my villagers have never shown an interest in boat building whatsoever.

Lobster traps would be fine - they abound in tropical waters

There is one event where some villagers build a boat. It means you lose (I think) eight villagers.

In my experience it's a choice they make, you can't force them to but if I'm wrong someone please correct me.

eh, spearfishing that is, not boat building Haven't had that event, Arnie, and don't think I want it.

Both times it happened to me the village was 'mature', near to or on the maximum population. The villagers soon made up for the missing members. There must be some way of the program making sure that it doesn't happen early on; imagine if it occurred right at the start of the game.

I suppose in some games it could be considered a good thing; rather than waiting for the more elderly villagers to die off, there is a sudden injection of youth to make sure the tribe will continue.

Yeah, I would love to see fishing nets! Be nice to see them working together. Although if they did it too much the algae would probably come back! heh.. parrot kabobs...
Before I got the Sharp Tools puzzle done I thought that the picture for it was an arrow, and that they would try to hunt the parrots!

there is, but you have to be very insistent! just drop them on the edges of the ocean beach!
