Try to not harvest them and use the other resources on the island if you can and use those as a last resort and then it won't seem like they take forever.

Don't let the tribe grow too large (maximum 14) as long as you don't have level 3 in farming. Otherwise you will have too many people to feed and the food won't last in between.
