Hey all,

I'm having a heck of a time installing Lost Children. It keeps looking for the exe file, and can't find it. I have uninstalled and installed three times now, and it does the same thing...Help!

Are you installing or trying to run it? The first time I ran it I had to go to the folder where it was installed and click on the exe file and then the icon was put on my desktop.

What kind of error? Which version are you installing (LDW or BFG?)?

It runs fine, in general, on Vista. Let's figure this out!

One thing you can try right away is to go into your harddrive into Program Files->Virtual Villagers - The Lost Children, and click the exe there. If that works, then just make a shortcut from that to your desktop. Please keep me informed so I know what is going on here...I might need to adjust/fix the installer.

Windows Vista is loaded with a lot of extra security.

I am wondering if the person installing the game needs to have administrator privileges.

Also I am wondering if Vista feels something about the installer or the game is insecure.

I do not have Windows Vista so I may be completely wrong.

Hope you get a fix. Arthur is very diligent and if anyone can fix it he can!

Good Luck!

Well i go through and install it just fine... But when i go to run it a box comes up saying "Virtual Villagers: The Lost Children.exe has stopped working" A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available... The i only have 1 option to close the box...

Im not sure what you mean by LDW or BFG?!?

Thank you for the help!

Did you get your Game From Last Day or Work or Big Fish Games? have you tried Right Clicking and run as administrator (you shouldn't have to but it's a start) did you have any error messages in your event log? or does it create a ldwlog.txt file under Documents/LDW/Virtual VIllagers - The Lost Children Dir...Can you post that if so...this will all help Arthur

Try the version from Big Fish games. First remove your version completely, and delete the folder "Virtual Villagers - The Lost Children" from Program Files, and delete the LDW folder from My Documents.

Let us know if that version works for you.

No, you won't have to repurchase the game. We'll let you know what you need to do. \:\)

Okay...I'm getting too aggravated here. I completly erased the first game and downloaded from Big fish. It has a pop-up when installing that it can't install the exe file, and asks to retry or ignore. I hit ignore and of course it doesn't download the exe file. So, now I have paid for both games and have none that work...

Okay...I don't get this. When I go into program files, there is still a Virtual Village file with a bunch of command files. I can erase all but two of the files. One of the files is fmod.dll, which is one of the files that it won't let me download, along with the exe. file. When I try to delete these two files, it says I need permission. So, I think these are the files from the LDW download, and that's why they won't download from the BFG version. Does that make sense? So, how can I delete these two files so I can try to download from BFG again?

Are you doing this from an admin account or a limited user account?

I don't know. I did activate my version of Vista, so I imagine I have full access. How can I tell?

The type of user account is not related to whether or not you have activated Vista. There are two types of user accounts on Vista, Administrator and Standard User. Only Administrator accounts can install programs. You can tell what kind of account you have by going to the Control Panel and selecting User Accounts and Family Safety and then User Accounts. You should see your account type on the right side of the window under the account name.

Okay, yeah, I'm under admin account. I haven't had any trouble downloading until now. It's just this game.

Which version of Vista are you running? What security software are you running - the Microsoft trial, or some other security software, like Symantec or CA?

I have installed LDW's version of the game from both an admin account and a standard account (using my administrator password), and the game runs fine for me on Home Premium.

I have home basic with Microsoft trial...

I'm still convinced it's because of the two files that I can't delete in program files. It's just too much of a coincidence that when I try to download, that that's the two files that it can't download...Maybe I need to call Vista?

I appreciate all you're trying to do though...

One more thing...When I now try to download LDW's version, it estimates that it will take 8 hours. I'm on cable and the first time I downloaded it, it only took 3 minutes...

I don't usually pay too much attention to those download time estimates, since they're usually not accurate. Once the download gets going, everything sorts itself out.

It's possible that your problem is being caused by those two files, although downloads will usually replace any existing files with the same name (but I haven't spent a lot of time with Vista yet). Have you tried rebooting to see if Vista simply has those files locked? I'm not running the Microsoft security trial (I'm using Symantec), so that's different from your setup, too.

Wow! It worked...All I had to do was restart and I was able to delete the files in the program files. I downloaded again, and it seems to be working perfectly...

Thank you Barbara and Arthur...Awesome work! I'll figure out how to get a refund on one later, but now it's time to play!

Thanks again!

Oh, about the download time, I was watching and giving it plenty of time, and I think it would have taken 8 hours...

Hi again,

The game works fine now, and I have been playing with it and like it. Now, the last thing...As I stated above, I payed for two versions, obviously I would like a refund on one, but I don't remember which version I downloaded that worked...

hi,
try right clicking on teh installer. go to properties. then click compatability, run for win xp sp2. then go to bottom ofg the page and click on run as administrator. this should clear up the problem. i'm still using the beta version of vista and it works just fine this way. you may have to right click the desk icon and do the same thing there as well. and you can re-install with the new compatability selections without uninstalling first.
