My first death was also the eldest. I had made the death stew (I didn't have the Isloa cookery book at the time) and when I saw the results of the stew, I tried to keep my villigers away. But my master builder, who was 50, won't stay away from the pot and when I was having one of the children collect a pearl, he ate from the black stew and dropped dead along with a 3 year old.
I know it's too late to say, but if that happens again, you can always just close the game and reopen it. That empties the stew pot.
