I'm down to my last couple of techs and I'm just curious if they're going to stop researching the minute I buy the last one or keep at it. There's a certain feature I haven't played around with yet since my tech points are too valuable at the moment and 5000 pts a pop is a little to steep for me. I'm just wondering if I should keep them at the table a little longer and build up a reserve so I can go shopping later.

No, they will keep researching. It is not like VV:ANH.

Oh good :). There are more things in VV2 to "spend" tech points on so I hoped they would keep researching and gain more so I could experiment with them :).
