Weakened villagers can be helped by having them eat and/or moving them to an easier job, such as farmer or doctor, where they won't get injured as often.
I got that hint from either the mask or the general guide(?) about moving them to an easier job... I was thinking more along the lines of researcher - I didn't know that farming was one of the easier jobs on them.
