Nah, they'd all been taught to fish..three of them became masters just from fishing..they just wouldn't do it more than once (from me dropping them in the water) then they'd go straight back to watering non-existant crops.

Seems I've solved the problem though..found the algae fish without the algae and now that puzzle is solved they are fishing AND crops are appearing.

Maybe it has something to do with doing the puzzles out of order?

That would seem to make the most sense. I was definitely wrong about the farmers needing to be taught by you how to choose different food resources, as I just had one whom I had on the fields go out and start harvesting coconuts while I was away, and another who started fishing. They do seem to prefer the task that you put them on though, whether fishing, harvesting coconuts, or tending the fields.

You'll just need to keep dragging them to the ocean if you want to solve that puzzle. Trust me, the Algae will come, but you are going to have to work to get. Wow! Did I just say that? LOL It could be a _bug_, but to find out we will need you to work extra hard and keep dropping your villagers in the ocean to see.

Algae does not seem to be required. In at least one village I had no algae, but was able to get the algae eating fish anyway.
