So is the type of totem that "Esteemed Elders" get entirely random or is it related to there master skills? I like the green one best.

i think that what rwextreme is trying to ask is, are the totem poles assigned to the "Esteemed Elder" in any random order, or is it assigned to each "Esteemed Elder" according to their mastered skills

That's a great question... I was wondering the same thing because I have 3 totems that 2 are the same.... Big and blue.

I think they're kinda random -- I have 5 different totems, but all the elders are masters in the same three skills...haven't quite had the time to get master doctors or master parents yet!
