Well, they did fix it, in that 2 kids won't pick up one item...but mistymage did the math, and I have tested it over and over, and it works if you put 4 kids on one item, but not 3. Helps when the food gets low....

So which purple plant is it? I've tried it and it doesn't seem to be working... or if it's the purple leaves which one? A screencap would rock.

Well, I tried this and I did not notice any change in the amount of collectibles I was finding. There was definitely nothing that popped up immediately. However, the little girl I tried this with promptly got sick. Probably a coincidence, but I haven't tried it anymore since.

Phooey, I lost a collectable item (not anything to do with this flower _bug_) because I had another pop up (one I already had), while the kid was bringing the new collectable to the hut. I had another kid pick up the old collectable, and the new one the other kid picked up disappeared. Now I know not to pick up other collectables when you've already got one on the way to the hut.
