Are you sure you didn't have an event? Some events came a villager dissapear.

Did you count the gravestones in the graveyard? If you've already had a burial, your villagers have "learned" how to bury the dead and will do so of their own intiative.

True, but they only bury the dead once the game is opened, so the funeral should have been spotted. That said, it is possible that REnergy did miss the funeral, so clicking on the gravestones (if any) might find her. If you haven't yet solved the graveyard puzzle, did you perhaps leave the game closed for some time without checking it? I seem to remember reading here that the skeletons do disappear after a while, although I don't know the specifics.

Yes! Their skeletons do disappear if left for too long! I hadn't yet figured out how to make the graveyard when my first villager died. Her bones eventually disappeared, and of course, 2 seconds later, when another villager died, I unlocked that puzzle... she didn't get a headstone.
