maybe we have discussed this before, maybe not.

I have been trying to eliminate the building skill from one of my established villages. I have not let anyone with any building skill breed for generations now. No babies are being born with building skill. I know I am not giving the villagers any experience in the area. However, they continue to show up. Half of my villagers keep managing to get the skill.

This obviously aggravates me. I thought that villagers didn't just magically learn things. They had to be taught it, or be born with it. Have I don't something wrong?

True, villagers don't just magically learn things, but... sometimes a villager will think a hut needs repair and will try to fix it. If he is successful, he'll gain skill and be that much more likely to try and do it again in the future. Just chalk it down to the villagers' curiosity and leave it at that. ^^

Not Eyeshigh, but I'll bet it's because he wants farmers, not builders, now that the puzzles are completed.

I'm a she, and yes I want farmers and healers, no need for builders, all they do is drive me insane with all of the fixing of the huts. I think at some point I must have given a male builder some breeding skill because I had a village full of children who were growing up to be builders, which was useful when I needed the ruins rebuilt and idol uncovered, but darn annoying otherwise!

Occasionally, there is a need for builders. One of the events can cause the beach to get cluttered with debris again. When that happens I just need to put one of my villagers on the beach and be successful once, and eventually others (with building skills) will join in on the task.

If there is no one with building skills, it'll take much longer, even if only one villager starts on the task.

But this is an interesting challenge and I may try it myself. I normall pick a male breeder who has both farming and building skills on the theory that they are going to learn to build anyway...

Drives me insane, too. I have a game that's been running since September. Most of the time, I do succeed in having children born with no building skill at all (because I very carefully choose a breeder with only farming or farming/healing skills). But there's always a builder or two who learned on their own - I never activate the building skill for anybody. And sorry about the gender mixup. \:\)

I've had to do that sometimes, too, when all my males somehow had acquired building skill. Only when I had the shipwreck events (beach debris) occur, did I intentionally activate building skills, and unfortunately, that tends to result in builder descendants for a couple of generations. Groan.

I've been trying to elimminate building skill for a long time because my dad's village is jam-packed with builders, and his food went from 4million to 500,000 \:\(

I think if I can get it down to only a handful of builders I will be happy. Last night I had a coniption fit because I got an event that wiped out 15 million in food, and while quite a few of them did go back to gathering food, my builders were fixing the huts while starving to death. Then half my farmers were either watering crops or doing laundry. I was not a happy camper.

And no worries about the gender mix up. My students accidentally call me Mister every once in a while (not that I could be confised for a guy-but hey). If i cared that much about it, my avatar would make it more clear that I'm a girl, instead of being my favorite painting.

ugh, when they go off to do laundry intstead of what I have told them to do, I just about go stark raving mad at times...

Right now, I'm working on just needing one master builder, but he's taking his sweet loving time on getting to that point...

Once I have all the rest uncovered he's going back to fishing...

when I catch them off doing laundry I grab one and drop them on the same sex willager and watch them run away. I keep hoping it will condition them not to do laundry.

The builders I dunk in the ocean or drop on the cactus. I don't know why they think all the huts need fixing when there is no food in the bin.

If i could have one or two villagers in charge of fixing huts, i would love that.

My question is....they never pick up skill from anything they are curious about, never try farming or research on their own....so why do they try to fix the huts and succeed at it without direction? It seems so inconsistent to me.

Yes I hear you on that, and it would be nice if they just tiddled off and foraged on their own instead of laundry or fixing huts all day everyday...

*sigh* could be just them though, maybe they have it built into them that they need to fix everything around while starving to death.

Its a good thing humans don't work that way would be extinct!

I was actually going to write just that, but while I was typing it, I realized we do work that way! How many times have you checked you e-mail instead of doing something you were supposed to be doing? Procrastinators.

And we all know someone like the GC, who never really grows up and is only interested in partying all the time. Although in real life we can put those people in jail when their parties get out of hand.

In some of my ongoing games, I don't bother to check off a preferred skill for the kids. They may start with something, but usually only one (except if I used a kid to help cure someone.)

But eventually most will become adept in Farming and Building.

In the game where I purposely train everyone to (in order) Building, Healing, Farming, Breeding (women only) I'll sometimes get a villager who refuses to learn any building skills!
