You're picking things up very quickly! I don't clear the lagoon until late in the game, but it took several games before I started that strategy.
I've also been bringing my villagers to the IPPA, especially in hard games with certain goals. In my most recent game I started with 2 adult males, 2 adult females, and 1 female kid. Then the first 3 kids born were all female. Finally I got a couple of males, and another female before my first two males died. (Otherwise, I would have been wishing for the barrel of kids!) As it was, there was a long wait until the eldest boy was old enough to breed.
I'm not sure that overworking the elderly brings an earlier death, except that they are more likely to get injured on the job. I'll usually set their preferences to Farming, Healing, or none at all and let them do what they want. If an adult female's health bar is very low (but not practically gone) I'll sometimes set her as a parent, since she'll heal while caring for the baby.
