I've just had the biggest shock ever.

I was happily letting my villagers get on with their lives. They'd been going for about 1100 hours.

I turn my back for 5 minutes and my 6 year old nephew not only manages to get into the game but also decides to click on start over as he wants to play.

Gone. It's all gone.

Let this be a warning to everyone who doesn't already know - never let a child near a computer unattended - it's not worth the lives of your villagers!!

May I make an alternative suggestion. Since children - especially unattended - find out in quick order much more about computers than a lot of adults know, rather than trying to stop that learning process, just take reasonable precautions, like routinely backing up your files. In the case of VV, those are the *.ldw files in the games folder. That way you get the best of both worlds: the villagers and your other work will be safe, and the child's learning curve isn't stymied.

Better to punish children so they learn not to touch things they aren't supposed to (this is presuming this six-year-old isn't supposed to, of course). Children need to learn to be considerate of others if they are going to grow into good adults. Sure, we should back up our files as well. But when you are the only person who uses your computer 99% of the time, it seems a bit much that you're supposed to guess that someone else will ruin your stuff. Sure hard-drive crashes and such happen, but that's another thing altogether.

Well I didn't assume he's not supposed to touch the computer... in fact, I would be shocked if that were case, seeing that kids are on the computer these days from 2-3 years old (those are the kids that at 12 years old are happily building their own networks). And the question of deleting files is not necessarily a matter of being inconsiderate... I've taught a whole lot of adults who managed to delete needed files - and being inconsiderate was the last thing on their minds.

Too true. The six-year old does know more about my computer than I do. I'd allowed him to use the computer to get onto some children's website and play games.

I forgot how inquisitive children are.

At least I now get to start from scratch though.

You honestly can't get that angry at the 6 year old.
If he is smart enough to know how to start up a new game he is on his way to making up his own little virtual villagers game.
He knew enough that he wanted to have his own game. Not someone elses. He just wasn't taught how to save a game.
But those terrible little mistakes are what make our great discoveries.
Honestly how many adults can even turn on a computer let alone play on one?
