I saw where a user posted a pic of his/her game with all the children lined up, and facing a totem pole!
How do you line the children up like that, and where did the totem pole come from?

The children were lined up manually while the game was paused. The totem is part of a user modification to the game. You can see the mods in Virtual Villagers Guide section of the forums.
