They keep trying to sneak away!!

I just got this game today and what can I say, I'm totally hooked. I had to start over tonight due to my whole village starving to death a few hours ago, and I'm trying to build tech points by having 5 of my villagers at the research table and 1 staying on top of the food supply... I've set all 5's skill pref to research, but they still keep trying to either sneak or outright RUN away from the research table LOL!!  And I swear, they *know* when I come back to watch them - I play on the non full screen option, and I keep switching back and forth from the internet to the game (w/o pausing the game)... I swear everytime I go to check on the game, they're all nonchalantly hanging out near the research table like "no, we're not going anywhere, we're doing our work, like you told us to..." then I click back to the internet and back to the game and I catch them redhanded trying casually sidle away from the table. LOL! I feel bad dragging them back when there are obviously so many things on the island that they're curious about, but hey, we need those points! Just wanted to share... this is a great game  xo Maria

Maria, welcome to our crazy world, the game is great.
Now about your food supply, I would put another as a farmer to help keep the food supply up. There are many ways to play the game and we all do it differently; but, I would buy an upgrade to farming as soon as possible. Your villagers could then harvest rather then depending on berries all the time.
At the research table, watch your people, when they do a little leg kick, they already earned the tech points. Give them a nudge so that they start the process of gaining points again. It's a little faster; you might get the second level of farming faster.

this might help with you problem..i found out if you have vv running,but its minimized,it sorta freezes it so they don't move at all

i just turned back to my game after reading this and one of my researchers was going away in that exect same kind of way you said yours were doing so i thought that maybe you should...
STARVE THEM TILL THEY WORK WORK OR STARVE WORK OR STARVE!!!!

sometimes i think hmm might as well check virtual villagers around this time and there always seems to be a pervert and 10 times more villagers to feed

I split my workers between farming and research untill food is at 500, then I pile them on the table until food is down to 250 then split them again.

I think you'll find, as in real life, the only thing starving villagers do well is weaken and die

I know watcha mean!
Here's a problem I (and I'm sure many others) have run into: I call them 'the village gossips'< they are impossible to train, because every time, as soon as you start to train them on a particlar chore, someone starts talking to them and they QUIT doing it to listen! No matter where you put them to train, they ALWAYS get interrupted and STOP working! ARGGHHH, I HATE that!

Unfortunately, rather when a villager wants to chat, argue, complain, tell a story, etc. rather than pick a random other villager (or the closest one available) they will pick the village "elder", the first one on the list. It does get frustrating when their work is always interupted (in one game he was also a runner!)
If the enler is female, I'll set her to breeding. That way she can sit there for two years listening to all the other villagers and it doesn't matter as much.
