When a villager dies, I wish I knew why except that they are old. If I am somewhere and hear a cough, I frantically try to find out who it was. I have only been there for one death and I wished all the villagers gathered at the grave for a moment. Sometimes, I want a villager to see some milestone before dying since he or she have been there for so long.

You can find that in the Game Log usually, most times it will give you if the villager died from starvation or maybe got injured too many times

I don't seem to be able to find the game log at all.

It's in the Virtual Villagers directory - called ldwlog.txt
