If the berry bush is completely empty, your only chance is to put every adult at the research table to get enough points for level 2 of Farming. If you have any children, you can have them pick mushrooms for food, and that might help prevent starvation. Also, it helps if you put your game on 1/2 speed. The villagers will be more efficient at that speed. The big mistake that most people make is trying to go for puzzles and other technologies, or grow their population too quickly, before there is a reliable food supply. The first priority has to be survival, and that depends upon good sources of food (which only improved farming technology can provide). You can check the Virtual Villagers Guide to get some good basic strategies.

My six little ones (6 kids 2 babies and 5 adults) keep my village gaining in food. I have 500+ mushrooms to date. Mushrooms are like the berry bush, it is a mushroom patch with mutliple mushrooms that sprout over night.

Yes, if you only have one child gather the mushroom patch they only get 8 units from the brown ones and 48 from the orange ones. But you can hit the drum at the school pause and place many children at the mushroom patch. Each will gather 8 or 48 depending on the mushroom patch type. Be fast because monkeys look for them in the morning as well. Plus the patches do not last time in the hot morning sun.

Cheat?! I prefer to think of them as mushroom patches without counters like the berry bush. The monkey reference is to one of the event that pops up. I wont spoil it for you, but highlight the empty area if you wish to know more. The Wild Mushroom (Your villager) has been watching the local monkeys and has observed them eating a particular variety of mushroom that sprouts rapidly and decays following a rain. One day, (he/she) finds and picks one, yet (he/she) is not sure whether to taste it or not.
Taste the mushroom 1) Taste the mushroom. The mushroom is delicious! (Your villager) has found a new tasty and nutritious food source, and gains foraging experience in the process. (He/She) then harvests the wild crop and adds them to the village food stores.
2) Taste the mushroom. A few minutes after tasting the strange fungus, (your villager) starts to feel very sick and is overcome with nausea and stomach cramps.
Discard the mushroom 1) Discard the mushroom. (Your villager) decides it is just too dangerous to try the strange mushroom, even though the monkeys seem to be eating them. For that matter, (he/she) is not completely sure this is the same kind. Thanks to JimmyNexus from RealArcade for the original post.
