You should find some freeware programs that do a heap of nice things I went to www.download.com and I found a free download of Paint.NET, which requires a download of Microsoft.NET to work, and it preserves the transparency. I had to play around with it a little bit, but if you are having the issue with the white around the carrying items, you can use the Magic Wand feature on it to select the white you want to remove.
