will our existing tribes be able to continue on with the journey? It comes to a point in the game when you have 2 or 3 games maxed out, whether you should delete them and start over? So, the decision is to continue on with hopes we can carry them into the next version upgrade or lose everything we accomplished?

Interesting question. From what I have read VVII will be a stand-alone program separate from VVI. So by that I would assume you will start a new tribe.
