So, I have the school supposedly done - there's a bongo outside and it says it's done in the puzzles section - BUT 1)all the adults still think "the building could be converted" and 2)I can't get anyone to actually hit the bongo and make the kids go to school... Do I need the third level in construction or something? Should I just not worry about it?

You get to ring the school bell - err -drum... just click on it
Also click on menu and check the bottom left hand corner. If you haven't got v. 1.01, then you need to upgrade by d/l from the same site you got it, and install in the same directory.

The school glitch that you're seeing is really a simple text message error and can be safely ignored. It appears that, for some reason, some versions of the game (even though they say v1.01) are missing that last-minute fix.

Ok... So I hit the drum and the kids come running. Then what? They just stand there for a while and then go away. I tried dragging adults over there, but no one's interested. I've seen screenshots of someone opening the door and the kids going inside. How do I do that?

Bang the drum again and they change formation. That's it, I'm afraid - except that with the school puzzle solved, kids are born with a notch of skill in some area.

you've seen someone opening door and them going inside! I've never seen that, can it happen?? or was that just a advertising pic?
