How do I get my villagers to grow crops? In my first game they just started giving water to the soil, but now nothing.

I guess I did something the first time and didn't realize it made the crops grow. Help, my little people are starving

Put everyone available to work on the research table and keep searching for the mushrooms. With luck you might be able to make it through. There's always the island events too...hopefully you'll get one which increases your food store (I once had bees find my berry bush and repollinate it back to full bloom).
