Two of my villages have 13 peeps and 5000+ food points. Can I safely leave them all on Research at 2x speed for 12-15 hours or so?

I don't want to go forward with the puzzles (have done about 5-6 of them, just to get to the lagoon or so) until I have the level 3 Medicine and Science. Both of those require huge amount of tech points, so I have almost everyone working on it -- at least, when I am watching them. What they do when I'm not around is their business, but I just know they are all swimming, arguing, and staring at that stupid boulder.

Personally I wouldn't leave them all on research on 2x speed unattended for that long. On higher speed they eat faster and in case of an unfortunate event that ruins your foodbin you will not be there to set some of them back to farming. In that case one can only hope some of them are smart enough to decide to get to farming on their own...

If it was me, I'd choose between leaving it on 2x speed with some farmers working, OR 1/2 speed/normal speed with every-one on research.

Leaving the village unattended on 2x speed for 12 hours sounds like a risky venture to me anyhow.
But maybe if you like living dangerously...?
