i got messing around one night & this is what i found out:

Food & their value:
Berries =2 food points
Veggies =7 food points
Mushrooms 8 food points
Fish =9 food points
Crabs =55 food points

Food & their value i have checked & double checked to make sure that this is the value of each food before i posted it ,so yes that is the true value of each food available on ISOLA VV.

not all berries and mushrooms are created equally.....

at certain stages of abundancy berries will be worth more

different colored mushrooms are different values

The red mushrooms are more points. Sorry tameno8, back to the research table for you.

When you start on Easy with over 1900 berries on the tree, each basket gives you 14 points of food. Not sure at what points it decreases until you get down to Kami's structure.

You need to rack up enough tech points to buy Farmining Tech, and if you haven't got enough yet, have the children pick some mushrooms to help out

Next time, when you're in a tight spot like that, put the game on pause before you leave home

there are fish in the ocean, but there are also a few things you need to go before you can catch them

Yeah - the berry bush running out of berries nearly cost me my first village. I ended up loosing 2 of my 5 people.

I wish it were a bit more clear at the beginning of the game ( perhaps during the tutorial section) that the berry bush will run out and you need to develop tech to get farming before you starve.

Another tip is you can change the run time on the game to half speed or even pause if you are going to be away and unable to monitor.

yes i have learned alot since i put in this post & i have found you can't depend on the berries always being the same amount all the time, it changes due to too many factors(weather,amount on bush....etc.)i have had diffrent amounts of berries picked & it can be (according to the day i counted the berries put in bin)2-303 maybe even more.on each level you also start picking diffrent amts,easy you pick 14-normal you pick 11 1st basket (then it drops to 10)-hard starts the same as normal.now this is on my game & i don't know if this is so on all games.i sat up most of monday night counting & wrighting down the amount of each basket on the 3 diffrent games at the start, on 1 it went down very slowly on an other it wes every 9th basket it went down 1.so berries are one item that is verry random i don't think it can be monitered .i did check the red mushrooms & so far i found them to be 45 food points ,it could change like the berries but i don't think they will but i'll keep an eye on them.sorry for my misstake about the berries. but i'm not giving up yet on trying to figure out how the berries are caculated.

I had to learn my food lessons the hard way. At the time, I did not know about pausing it, but thanks to these forums and all of you kind folk, I quickly learned the ropes. (I don't really use words like "folk", just making fun of me being in KY!)

Another thing you may want to do is go to Menu, then Options and change the speed of the game. Personally I run mine at 1/2 speed. There are pros and cons to that. First, your moms will have to nurse babies for more minutes, but on the other hand your villagers will age a lot more slowly and give you a chance to get tech points. I would recommend that you put everybody on the research table until you have enough points to get level 2 of Farming, and have your kid or kids pick mushrooms whenever possible to keep a little food available for your villagers. Hope that helps!

If the game is on 1/2 speed, don't you get tech points slower as well?

It depends. If the game is off, they will produce fewer research points at 1/2 speed. However, if the game is running, the villagers will work at whatever rate their movements allow, which could produce more tech points than a similar period of time with the game off.

With regards to food - are tech points gained for doing activities like watering the field or the patch? I tried to keep an eye on my points to check but its hard to tell.

Question to the powers-that-KNOW, once you have level 3 farming do you need to keep foraging, etc. to have a well-rounded diet Just want know how much time/what percentage of manpower I need to devote to it. I mean once your food is in the 1000's !?!?!

Tech points are separate from villager skills. Tech points are gained only by working at the research table (and villagers will gain skill as Scientists in the process). Villagers will gain farming skill by watering crops, planting crops, harvesting crops, fishing, and foraging, although only the last 3 will actually produce food.

OH Yeah! How many villagers can water crops before we flood the field?!
oh another hint be Slo-o-ow in breeding more kids until you get farm 3, but make sure you always have one pre-teen to gather mushrooms....

Will the crops be affected if I don't let them water them. The reason is that there is zero food but the berries are approx 160. One of the little kids is weakened from starvation but unless I keep putting the farmers on the berry bush to forage they prefer to water the crops instead . I'm worried the kids will starve before the crops come in. I have it set on Hard so the mushrooms are few and far between. BTW, red mushrooms are worth about 45 points if you can find them

No they will not be affected. The crops are on their own timer and don't need to be planted or watered. So keep them forageing!
