I've finished my first hut, but I've already researched level 2 construction but cannot find where to build the second hut. Must I research the last level or something???

No they will start the 2nd hut on their own when your Population reaches the stage more huts are needed

To the left of the Research Table -- you should see some "hay" it will start rt there - when yer pop reaches a "Milestone" look rt over there and the scaffolding will appear then you can start throwing villagers at it
